New Braunfels Marine killed in landing craft accident - San Antonio Express-News

A New Braunfels Marine was one of nine troops killed in a training accident off the southern California coast.

The Marines said Lance Cpl. Guillermo Perez, 20, was killed when his landing craft took on water off San Clemente Island.

One of his sisters, Bobbie Medelez, wrote on her Facebook page, “These next few days will be the hardest … I can’t tell you how much this is gonna hurt me & has hurt me … I don’t know how to take in all this … I don’t know how to stop all this hurt.”

The Marines said they ended a 40-hour search-and-rescue operation Sunday after an accident Thursday in which an amphibious assault vehicle carrying 15 Marines and one sailor began taking on water off the coast of San Clemente Island. Eight Marines were rescued. Two others were listed in critical condition at a local hospital.

A report from the nonprofit U.S. Naval Institute said Perez was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to a hospital by helicopter. Two other Marines were injured and taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, with one in critical condition and the others in stable condition, USNI said.

The five other Marines were taken back to the USS Somerset, an amphibious ship.

“It is with a heavy heart that I decided to conclude the search and rescue effort,” said Col. Christopher Bronzi, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit commanding officer. “The steadfast dedication of the Marines, sailors. and Coast Guardsmen to the persistent rescue effort was tremendous.”

A military press release said that over the course of the search, Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard helicopter, ships and watercraft searched more than I,000 square nautical miles. Bronzi said the Marines would continue to search for the missing men.

An investigation into the incident is underway.

The Associated Press said Perez’s body was the only one so far found. The other dead were listed as Marine Pfc. Bryan Baltierra, 19, of Corona, Calif.; Lance Cpl. Marco Barranco, 21, of Montebello, Calif.; Pfc. Evan Bath, 19, of Oak Creek, Wisc.; Pfc. Jack Ryan Ostrovsky, 21, of Bend, Ore.; Cpl. Wesley Rodd, 23, of Harris, Texas; Lance Cpl. Chase Sweetwood, 19, of Portland, Ore.; Cpl. Cesar Villanueva, 21, of Riverside, Calif., and Navy Hospitalman Christopher Gnem, 22, of Stockton, Calif.
