AMHERST – Provisions – the wine, craft beer and specialty meat and cheese store in downtown Northampton – will soon open a second location in space at The Mill District in North Amherst.
Both Mill District owner and developer Cinda Jones and the owners of Provisions – Bruce McAmis and Benson Hyde – announced the deal Tuesday afternoon.
At first, Provisions will take over 4,700 square feet of the cow barn building on the property vacated last week by Atkins Farm Country Market which remains open at its South Amherst location. But Jones said the long-term plan is to move Provisions into purpose -built space in the North Square building in about a year.
Before Provisions can open in the temporary space, it still needs a beer and wine license, McAmis said. The partners have not yet begun that process with the town.
It's a big step forward during the global coronavirus pandemic for both the development and for the store McAmis and Hyde opened in 2011
“This is a bit of a risk here. But we think at the end of the day, COVID may last sometime into next year,” McAmis said. “We are really looking at Amherst in the long term.”
For Jones, it is important for her to point out that the W.D. Cowls Inc. Land Company is the 14th oldest family owned business in the country with roots back to 1741.
“This is our home farm and every generation has had to reinvent it to meet the needs of the time,” she said. “This is not our first challenge. We’ve shut down a lot of business over 9 generations - the sawmill and trolley system and we’ve opened a lot of businesses.”
Jones said he company has worked hard to keep tenants in the Mill District strong, including setting up tents – and taking them down to avoid Hurricane Isaias – and starting Wednesday an outdoor sink so salon The Lift can do outdoor hair styling.
"We are taking a bit of a risk," she said. "We hope community sees the benefits of shopping locally. We know that this new area will thrive if it has a lot of retail opportunities ."
Also in North Square, Cowls Building Supply will expand in the next few months with The General Store in about 4,000 square feet.
It'll have housewares, books, pots, pans, toys, Jones said.
"Everything you are used to going to Route 9 for," she said, referring to the busy Hadley commercial strip between Amherst and Northampton.
For McAmis, he said he'll expand his staff from 12 to about 20. And he sees opportunity in the coronavirus. With fewer people traveling and more people staying home, a basket of goodies from Provisions is an affordable, socially distanced experience, he said.
“It is a challenging time to expand a business,” he said. “We’ve been thinking about making a move into Amherst for quite some time now. This opportunity came along.”
McAmis and Hyde are now opening another store called Bottle-O on North King Street in Northampton. It’s also for beer “geeks” and wine aficionados, he said, but won’t have the full cheese counter like Provisions.
Jones said she’d like would like to eventually, post coronavirus, when Provisions is across the square in its new space, lease the cow barn building to a restaurant/bar with live music.
