Up North: Cyclists ride to Duluth's craft district for a cause - WDIO

"We just opened up the Craft Connector trail that goes from Enger Tower down into the Lincoln Park Craft District, so you can ride your bike down the trails and pick up a brew at the end," said Alec Kadlec, a COGGS chairperson.

That's exactly what some cyclists did last weekend for Bike for Brews. Cyclists could ride their bikes down to Ursa Minor to pick up a free drink and support the Kraus-Anderson Bike Festival.

"We built this place to support our local community and [Kraus-Anderson is] doing that with their festival, which isn't happening this year in-person, but next year it'll be on and rocking," said Ben Hugus, the founder of Ursa Minor.

Kraus-Anderson brewed up the idea for a biking fundraiser after they had to cancel their popular 7th annual festival set for early August at Duluth's Spirit Mountain.

"I think everyone is trying to make the best of a different situation. It's great that Ursa and Kraus-Anderson were able to come together to put together an event to celebrate bikes and in the area," said Northland cyclist Mason Bacso.

In order to continue helping the festival following the Bike for Brews event, Ursa Minor created a Pedal Master beer. For every crowler sold one dollar will go towards helping fund next year's bike festival.

"Money raised goes towards hosting the festival next year and putting it on. Ultimately the festival, this would have been its seventh year, has raised over a quarter million dollars for COGGS and other beneficiaries over the year," Kadlec said.

"Everyone's kind of doing what they can. We'd love to donate more but we're doing what we can for the neighborhood," said Hugus.

Despite not being able to ride at Spirit Mountain this year, Bacso said it was fun to utilize the trails Saturday to bike down and support the event.

"The whole festival gives back to the community in a huge way so any little bit I think is a positive thing."
