Find your treasure at Middleburg Heights pop-up craft shop - cleveland.com

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Handmade Treasures, a seasonal craft shop featuring a wide variety of one-of-a-kind items, has returned to Southland Shopping Center for a second season.

The store, which opened Monday (Oct. 4), will feature creations by 60 vendors daily through Dec. 28.

The store is located adjacent to Petco at 6879 Southland Drive. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday until Thanksgiving and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. thereafter. The store is open Sundays throughout the season from noon until 5 p.m.

Handmade Treasures offers proof that a few positives emerged from the coronavirus pandemic. Like many veteran crafters, owners Roxanne Harmuth and Cyndi Brunnet, both residents of Brook Park, were frustrated by the cancellation of most 2020 craft shows.

Rather than despair, the duo seized the opportunity to connect artists with prospective customers while also realizing their longtime dream of owning a business.

“If it wasn’t for COVID, I don’t even know if we would’ve been here,” revealed Brunnet.

The initial 2020 offering was so successful that Handmade Treasures extended its season from two to three months for 2021.

“We were totally blown away by how well received we were in the community,” said Brunnet. “Everybody was so excited to see us returning this year.”

In fact, loyal customers lobbied Harmuth and Brunnet to keep the shop going at the end of the 2020 season, though a short-term lease and the challenges of running a business seven days a week compelled the owners to close up shop in late December.

That turned out to be a prudent move. Both contracted COVID-19 in January, a few weeks after the shop closed.

Although their illnesses were unrelated to Handmade Treasures, contracting the virus was still difficult to reconcile for the owners of a shop that had earned a reputation as one of the cleanest in town.

The pair vow to keep up the same meticulous sanitizing and social-distancing regimen that put customers at ease last year.

As in 2020, Handmade Treasures will feature many one-of-a-kind items, as well as more typical craft show fare -- though always with a distinctive flair.

“We try to find uniqueness in whatever the crafters make,” remarked Harmuth.

Likely 2021 favorites include vintage newspaper and magazine advertisements meticulously reproduced and frequently nestled in appropriately aged frames, Brunnet’s bullet-slice jewelry, wine bottles creatively decorated with twine and imagery, bowl koozies for hot or cold dishes, shopping cart handle covers, records and DVDs transformed into stunning artworks, and hand-fused glass trivets.

Palatable options include mixes for wine slushies, as well as wine, tea and pepper jellies. Customers can also purchase table runners, aprons, lotions, bath products, cloth masks, handmade greeting cards, wood-burned items and much more.

One-of-a-kind creations set Handmade Treasures apart, though ease of access is also a draw. The shop features more artisans than many craft shows, is open seven days a week and parking is a cinch.

However, on a few yet-to-be-determined December dates, Santa’s sleigh and reindeer will occupy several parking spaces.

The shop will again be making a philanthropic contribution. Jeff Goodman, a 27-year-old Macedonia resident with a rare spinal condition, will be the beneficiary. Goodman, the father of 6-month-old twins, will soon travel to Chicago in hopes of regaining the ability to walk and function normally.

The store is sponsoring several raffles, and full proceeds from various items will go toward his medical bills. Donations will also be accepted at Handmade Treasures. In addition, the shop is promoting the Goodman GoFundMe page.

The welcoming feel of Handmade Treasures won over vendors and customers alike in 2020 and will undoubtedly do so again.

Crafters commit to volunteering a specific number of hours each month, thereby ensuring a knowledgeable person is always available. Many of the artisans hang around long after the required time to assist the many patrons who linger in the cozy shop.

“We are like one big family,” said Brunnet. “Everybody just gets along so well.”
