JACKSON COUNTY, Mississippi -- Mississippi’s new daily cases of COVID-19 have dropped so rapidly over the past six weeks that a state once ranked number one in daily new cases of COVID per capita has fallen to 47th among the 50 states and District of Columbia.

Over the past seven days, the Mississippi Department of Health reported 3,706 new cases of COVID-19 statewide, another 16% drop from the previous week and the sixth consecutive week the number of new cases across the state has decreased. There were 83 deaths reported, a decrease of 33.6% from the prior week and down nearly 60% from two weeks ago.

The state’s ranking in daily COVID deaths per capita has also fallen from at or near the top to now 31st.

While the COVID-19 news is good, Mississippi is approaching the grim milestones of 500,000 total cases and 10,000 deaths since the COVID outbreak began in March 2020. As of Tuesday, the state had totals of 499,838 cases and 9,935 deaths.

Locally, Jackson County reported 193 cases for the week, down from 197, and five deaths, down from nine. The county now totals 24,452 cases and 379 deaths. Harrison County reported 279 cases, down from 293, and eight deaths, down from 11, and now totals 34,258 cases and 537 deaths.

The Mississippi coast as a whole had 512 new cases of COVID during the past week, down from 539, and 13 deaths, down from 22 and a decrease of 64.9% in two weeks. The coast now totals 66,418 cases and 1,042 deaths.

Other data shows hospitalizations continue to fall, with 286 people hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Monday statewide, down from 352 a week ago. There were 103 COVID patients in intensive care, down from 137, and 62 were on ventilators, down from 76.

Locally, Singing River Hospital had six COVID-19 patients, with one in ICU. Ocean Springs Hospital had five patients with COVID-19 and also had one in ICU.

The MDH now reports 482,091 people are presumed recovered from COVID, with 7,812 known active cases, down another 33.4%. That number represents one active case of COVID-19 for every 380 Mississippi residents.

While the state’s COVID case and death rankings have improved dramatically in recent weeks, it’s vaccination ranking has not, as Mississippi maintains it’s position at 47th among the 50 states and District of Columbia.

There have now been 2,922,378 total doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered in the state -- up by 41,824 in the past week. There are now 1,356,531 Mississippians fully vaccinated, up by 15,032 from a week ago, and representing 45.7% of the population. Mississippi ranks ahead of only Alabama, Wyoming, Idaho and West Virginia in percentage of population fully vaccinated.

Locally, Jackson County now has 54,998 residents fully vaccinated, an increase of 502 from a week ago and representing 38.3% of the population. Some 63,239 residents have received at least one dose, up by 738. Harrison County now has 81,384 residents fully vaccinated, or 39.1%, with 93,228 having received at least one dose, up by 181.
