HALES CORNERS, Wis. — Mary Rantella and Jill Kiewig from Muskego said they took Sunday as a ‘girl’s day.’
“We love to get together, and it’s her birthday this week, so we’re kind of hanging out today,” Rantella said.
They spent part of their day at the Boerner Botanical Garden looking at some hand crafted jewelry to possibly buy for family members for Christmas.
“We only bought stuff for us, for now,” Kieweg said. "The first one, but now we’re looking for others, right? Maybe,” Rantella added.
They weren’t alone. For the four hours of the Friends of Boerner Botanical Garden’s Holiday Craft Show on Sunday, hundreds of people showed up to see what local vendors and businesses had to offer.
“We are looking for something for our relatives, my relatives in Ohio, we’re going to see them in a couple weeks,” said Wendy Lehman of Greendale.
Lehman said she likes to see what local crafters have, because spending money on those goods can really help a family owned business.
“I also make things myself, so I like the idea of supporting other businesses too,” Lehman said.
She was looking at handcrafted soaps, but there were a lot of different vendors at the craft show, like Kelly Mutsch. She runs a clothing business called “Eco Evie” named after her 11-year-old daughter.
“Evie picks all the animals, I get to to do all the designing, and they’re made in small batches in Milwaukee,” Mutsch said.
10% of her sales go to help endangered animals. It's something she said is important to her daughter.
And her clothing is all made from recycled water bottles.
"So the water bottles get chipped up into small pieces, they’re melted into these balls, and when they’re melted again, they can actually extrude yarn from that,” Mutsch said.
And after a two year hiatus because of COVID-19, the craft show shows shopping small can be a good way to look for those Christmas and holiday gifts for your family.
