We’re going to have to wait to find out because baseball’s hot stove went cold at 11:59 Tuesday night with its collective bargaining agreement expiring and owners calling for an immediate lockout.
Until owners and the union work out a new CBA, which could take days, weeks or months, the sport is in shutdown mode.
This work stoppage is a first for Major League Baseball since players went on strike on Aug. 12 1994 and didn’t return for 232 days. That labor war killed the entire 1994 postseason and led to owners using replacement players to field teams in 1995 spring training. The scab players were days away from playing regular-season games when owners and the labor finally settled on a new CBA.
The union is determined to change baseball’s economical system in this fight, and according to Mets new ace Max Scherzer, they’re unified. One of the union’s many quests is to stop clubs from tanking for high draft picks.
“We’re trying to make the game more competitive through various means,” Scherzer, one of four players association reps, said Wednesday in a Zoom media conference. “There are so many different ways that we as players believe that we can make the game better and we’re absolutely committed to doing that. When I hear every player, whether young or old, they are all saying the same thing clubhouse to clubhouse. So it’s not just me that thinks this. It’s everybody. It’s obvious to all the players.”
