DULUTH, Minn. – Some new apartments are coming to the Lincoln Park Craft District in Duluth. Deconstruction has already started on the $6 million project at an old furniture store.
The Enger Lofts project is the third of three recent redevelopments of furniture stores in Lincoln Park.
Deconstruction at the site on West Superior Street, which was most recently Furniture and Mattresses 4 Less, is in full swing. The complex will include 40 residential units on two upper floors and commercial and retail space is planned for the street level.
The space was purchased in January for $730,000. This is a big step forward for the neighborhood, which has been struggling with housing issues.
“We love to see positive development, positive things going on in the community. We got really excited about seeing more housing come to the area as well cause there’s all these businesses, all this activity that’s going on so the idea of having people to live, work and play in the neighborhood,” said Josh MacInnes, Director of Development at 1LLC.
Leasing for the apartments will start at around the mid-800’s. Local business owners tell us they’re excited for developments like these to keep the district growing and thriving.
“Since we’ve been here since 2011, it really is a lot of fun to see how much more people are around the vibrancy, people walking the streets, pushing strollers and just enjoying what’s going on in this part of town,” said Christian Benson, owner of Frost River Trading.
This is the first project in the Lincoln Park area that 1LLC has done.
Other projects are also being planned for the Lincoln Park neighborhood, including a 75 unit four story apartment complex on the corner of the 21-hundred block of West Superior Street.
That’s the former home of Robert’s Furniture, and changes are happening in the now-sold Anderson Furniture building a few blocks away.
“Lake Wood Designs” will take over a large portion of the former Anderson building with multi-use space for other local businesses to lease.
