BAY CITY, MI - A new type of bar is coming to downtown Bay City. Instead of serving up craft brews, this new bar is offering a chance to make arts and crafts.
The Studio 23 arts center and gallery at 901 N. Water St. is opening a walk-in, self-service art experience where visitors can come in at their own convenience and work on a project of their choosing, education coordinator Autumn Reyes said.
“I came up with the idea when I realized we had a lot of art enthusiasts in our Great Lakes Bay region who wanted to come to the studio and create but, the times/days of our classes never seemed to fit their busy schedules,” said Reyes. “I had heard of a similar venture down in Austin, Texas, and thought this could be the answer to try and fill the niche here.”
For those looking to try out the new craft bar, Studio 23 is hosting a grand opening celebration for the new project at 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 5-7. The craft bar will be a permanent addition to Studio 23 after the opening.
The craft bar will have a “menu” where visitors can order what craft they would like to work on and Studio 23 will then provide them with a packet that includes all the instructions and supplies they need.
The type of projects are greatly varied to give everyone a chance to pick something to their liking.
“We’ve got everything from painting to felt projects to diamond art to jewelry making. So it really runs the gamete,” said Reyes.
Reyes said that the craft bar will also have an “ala carte menu” where one can order individual supplies to go wild with art on a whim without instruction.
Prices for projects and supplies range from $2 - $25.
“Part of our mission here at Studio 23 is to make the arts accessible to everyone,” said Reyes. “We think the craft bar is a benefit to the GLB region by offering a creative experience that works around our increasingly busy schedules.”
