Matter of Craft in Huntington Beach has opened, serving craft beer, pizza and more - OCRegister

Matter of Craft in Huntington Beach replaces SeaLegs Wine Bar on Beach Boulevard and it couldn’t be more different from its predecessor. Instead of a focus on sipping cabernet and chardonnay with wine-friendly nibbles this new concept is a taproom with craft beer also sold by the bottle and can.

The menu has also shifted to foods that pair with beer: artisan pizza, meatballs and more.

Founders Jim Pilkington, Jim Perkins and Tom Briggs are three self-proclaimed soccer dads and longtime Huntington Beach residents who want to share their mutual passion for their latest craft brew finds.

“We’ve come a long way from being just three dads on the sideline of our daughters’ soccer games. We’ve been in this city for nearly 20 years, raised our kids here and sent them to schools here, so to see Matter of Craft open and be part of the Huntington Beach community is a really special moment for us all,” said Pilkington.

Craft beer enthusiasts can find favorites served from rotating taps ($6.25-$8.50) or in the beer fridges which will be stocked with 120 types in bottles and cans. There will still be wine ($8-$11 per glass) and craft cocktails ($12), too.

Executive Chef Adam Schmalz, formerly of Long Beach’s The 4th Horseman restaurant, will make a dozen different pizzas from Duck Confit ($20-$30) to Hell Fire ($16-$24), a kimchi-topped pie, and tamer kinds like house-made sausage and mushroom ($16-$24). The crispy edged, chewy in the middle dough is prepared in-house and cold fermented for two days. He’ll serve shareable Lobster Bites ($15), Crispy Ravioli ($9) and Mozzarella Sticks ($9), as well as salads ($10-$15), and a burger ($15). He’ll also offer desserts ($9-$13) and gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options on some menu items.

Everyone’s invited to stop by for a bite and a beer, says Pilkington.

“Jim, Tom and myself are so proud to open a restaurant, bottle shop and tap room that is exactly the place we’d want to frequent,” he said. “We can’t wait to welcome lovers of craft beer, good food and great times to Matter of Craft.”
