Boaters rescued from choppy Lake Huron waters after vintage Chris-Craft becomes disabled - MLive.com

CASEVILLE, MI — A vintage Chris-Craft boat and its passengers were rescued after a day marooned in Lake Huron off Michigan’s Thumb.

About 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, Huron County Sheriff’s deputies received reports of a distressed boat off the shores of Caseville Township. They arrived to find a 22-foot-long, 1946 Chris-Craft was at anchor 500 to 1,000 feet from shore. They were unable to speak with those on board.

While deputies monitored the situation from shore, arrangements were made for the agency’s 28-foot patrol boat to be brought from Bad Axe.

The wind continued to increase, getting as high as 30 mph out of the northeast, with waves building to 4 to 5 feet high, according to Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson.

After about 45 minutes, a boat owned by a towing company arrived and tried taking the distressed Chris-Craft to shore. That vessel wound up being swamped by a wave and was also disabled. It eventually drifted toward shore and was beaten against a steel break wall, where it was further damaged.

Deputies then learned of another tow boat being on its way. They obtained a cellphone number of one of the people aboard the first boat, allowing them to communicate with the stranded boaters, who said they were “cold but riding it out,” Hanson said.

Damaged tow boat

A tow boat that had tried to bring a disabled Christ-Craft vessel to shore in Lake Huron on May 3, 2020, only to be damaged itself when waves pushed it into a steel break wall.

Around 7:30 p.m., the second tow boat arrived with the sheriff’s office’s patrol boat nearby. The stranded boat was towed out of harm’s way, but not without a couple of large waves throwing it about in the choppy water, Hanson said.

Once the boat was ashore, some of its occupants had a hard time walking and were very cold. Scheurer Ambulance personnel checked them out and they refused further treatment, the sheriff said.

The 54-year-old boat owner from Caro told deputies they had begun their boat trip earlier in the day with much calmer water and westerly winds. Once they became disabled, the wind eventually turned and increased, dropping the temperature immensely, the sheriff said.

“Early season boaters are advised to be mindful that emergency-on-water services are very limited in our area this time of year,” Hanson said. “Always have a backup plan in place, consider your vessels capabilities and mechanical condition, as well as make sure there’s proper safety equipment and appropriate weather gear aboard.”
