The number of people who have recovered from COVID-19 pushed past 38,000 on Saturday, state health leaders said.
The state Heath and Human Services Department issues new numbers every Saturday for recoveries, defined as someone who is alive 30 days beyond the onset of COVID-19 symptoms.
The latest state numbers for Saturday, May 30, show 263 new cases and 57 deaths. Among the deaths, 37 were identified through a vital records review and occurred outside the last 24 hours. The reviews are done three times a week.
Overall, the state now has recorded 56,884 cases of COVID-19 and 5,463 deaths.
Health leaders encourage people to look at weekly averages for cases and deaths.
The latest numbers for the week ending May 27 show an average of 360 cases per day and 34 deaths. That’s compared to an average of 552 cases per day for the week prior and an average of 49 deaths per day.
Michigan continues to show four counties with no COVID-19 cases. All are in the Upper Peninsula.
The data shows that of the 263 new cases, 165 were reported through the Michigan Department of Corrections. The state committed to testing all prisoners earlier this month.
Among counties, Kent County had 46 new cases and Wayne County had 27.
Wayne County has almost 36% of the state’s known cases of COVID-19, compared to almost 18% of the state’s population.
The data shows the average age of COVID-19 deaths at 75.3 years. Of the deaths, 53% have been male and 47% female.
The percentages are reversed for coronavirus cases, with 52% female, 47% male and 1% listed as unknown.
Here’s a look at the Michigan counties with the most confirmed cases.
1. Wayne County: 20,254 cases (2,452 deaths)
2. Oakland County: 8,319 cases (983 deaths)
3. Macomb County: 6,624 cases (802 deaths)

COVID-19 PREVENTION TIPS
In addition to washing hands regularly and not touching your face, officials recommend practicing social distancing, assuming anyone may be carrying the virus.
Health officials say you should be staying at least 6 feet away from others and working from home, if possible.
Use disinfecting wipes or disinfecting spray cleaners on frequently-touched surfaces in your home (door handles, faucets, countertops) and carry hand sanitizer with you when you go into places like stores.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has also issued an executive order requiring people to wear face coverings over their mouth and nose while inside enclosed, public spaces.
