Family craft: Hit the rocks — with some paint - Duluth News Tribune

In the early days of pandemic panic, a Facebook friend posted a pic of brightly painted rocks resting in a houseplant — compliments of her grade-school kiddos.

I have a stack of canvases collecting dust in my closet, proof that I can overthink myself out of creative play. But when I saw this post, I knew this was a simple enough craft to side-step the thinking and just enjoy.

During a Zoom date with friends, I Googled images that I wanted to re-create, a bumblebee, a ladybug. And while it wasn’t as good as being with friends in person, it was something.

Next up, a watermelon slice and some dot mandala designs.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Rocks
  • Paint (I used acrylic)
  • Paintbrush
  • Palette (I used a plastic plate)

DIRECTIONS

  • Wash rocks with soap and water.
  • Apply a layer to the top of each rock. Dry 5-10 minutes. Repeat on the reverse side.
  • Paint your design.
  • Place in planters or wherever will make you smile.
