NORTH PROVIDENCE – A new combined boating center and arts and crafts building at Camp Meehan/Notte Park is moving along well, says Mayor Charles Lombardi, and should be done within a few weeks.

The building, another grant-funded improvement to the park, will accommodate the town’s unique school marine trades program, which utilizes the Wenscott Reservoir for boating, as well as recreation programs for summer camp.

The walls were up as of Monday, said Lombardi, and trusses will be installed next. The building will host marine trades classroom study and arts and crafts spaces.

North Providence won another $182,500 from the Champlin Foundation for the transformation of the old arts and crafts building at Camp Meehan in late 2018.

The town used grant funds to purchase the former camp space as open recreation land in 2012, also using grant funds, and has completed numerous projects within it since, using grants from various organizations, particularly Champlin and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

The new building and other amenities, says Lombardi, complement a “jewel of a property” that will be used by generations of town residents.

A new event center/recreation building, outdoor amphitheater, gazebo and trail system are among the other improvements made to the expanded park over the years.
