Wisconsin Craft breweries wait to safely reopen taprooms - Spectrum News 1

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) - Just like Wisconsin’s bars and restaurants, craft breweries across the state are hoping to safely return to work in the near future. Milwaukee’s Broken Bat Brewing Company is stuck in the on deck circle, anxiously awaiting its grand reopening.

Tim Pauly and Dan McElwee opened the baseball-themed brewery in the Third Ward in 2017. They had big plans to open a much larger taproom in a new location in Walker’s Point at the start of the 2020 baseball season. However, as the pandemic delayed their favorite sport’s season, their own Opening Day would have to wait, too.

“Our hopes were pretty high for the end of March, early April, then it was just figuring it out and pivoting and making it work,” Pauly said.

For now, Broken Bat and other craft breweries across the state are limited to curbside beer sales, and these small businesses are helping each other through a difficult stretch. Broken Bat opened its canning operation to package a few kegs from fellow breweries, allowing them the chance to collect some revenue with their own curbside sales.

“We are competitors, per se, but we also understand that as a community that if we’re all doing well, then Milwaukee is doing well and the beer scene is doing well,” Pauly said.

Broken Bat and its competitors are itching for the nights with baseball on their TVs and cold beers across the bar.
