IPSWICH — Although the venerable Olde Ipswich Days fair was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns, a crafty group decided to hold a smaller fair at the weekend.

The Crafty Ladies set up half a dozen booths in the shade outside the high school on Saturday and invited the public out.

“It’s been steady, and it has not been crowded at all. People are coming through in little groups,” said organizer KelleyJane Kloub.

Although enjoying the day in her chair under a tree, she also commented that the fair gave a glimpse of more normal, non-pandemic life.

“It’s a start,” agreed Michelle King of Lost Art Crochet. The only crafter not from Ipswich, she noted that a lot of shows through the fall were canceled.

That was bad for attendees and vendors alike, she added. “Shoppers want to shop. They just need an opportunity.”

“I think people are glad to get out. They love craft fairs,” said Becky Gongas of Ipswich, who makes crayons and baby gear.

“People are out and happy to be out,” said Michele Elliott at her jewelry stand.

After the fair, Kloub thanked town manager Tony Marino, school superintendent Brian Blake, and the school committee for allowing the fair.

“It went very well. People were shopping and very happy to have something to do that they would have been doing this weekend had Olde Ipswich Days not been cancelled,” she said.

“Everyone did perfect with social distancing and wearing masks, and all were happy that each tent had hand sanitizers available,” Kloub said.

Another fair with more booths is planned for the fall.
