New breweries, taprooms and more: 12 craft beer openings in central Pa. - pennlive.com

The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t stopped local craft brewers from pursuing their plans.

Certainly, the coronavirus delayed taproom grand openings and pushed back brewery plans. Anyone in the business knows you have to forge ahead in order to be successful.

Several breweries are in the process of expanding, while new ones are coming on board. Some have already opened and others are close to turning on the taps.

Here are 12 new craft breweries making their mark on the central Pa. craft beer scene. Apologies if we excluded any newcomers.

Here’s the rundown:

The Englewood

The live music venue/restaurant/brewery, part of the Hershey West End mixed-use development in Derry Township, is targeted to open July 20 in a rehabilitated barn.

The historic dairy barn, known as the Englewood Barn, underwent a multi-million dollar transformation, including sound and lighting by Clair Global in Lititz. The company produces global concerts for artists like Taylor Swift, Elton John and Guns N’ Roses.

“It has been a bit of a dream with nightmarish qualities to it, but we’re on the homestretch right now and excited to get it open,” said partner Rick Russell via a Facebook video update.

Brewing will be headed by Jesse Prall, former founder/brewer for Rubber Soul Brewing. He has worked at Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Delaware and Appalachian Brewing Co. in Harrisburg.

The restaurant will be managed by Tom Scott, former owner of McGrath’s Pub and Scott’s Grille in Harrisburg. Englewood’s menu will be upscale casual and eclectic, Russell said, adding it’s being developed by chef Matt Miller.

Ever Grain Farms

A little bit of funk is coming to Ever Grain Brewing Co. as the brand welcomes Ever Grain Farms.

Owners Norm Fromm and Larry Dolan purchased a small farm in Upper Allen Township to focus on funky farmhouse beers with a nod to old world traditions.

Ever Grain Farm will feature 100% oak fermented beers, mixed culture beers, native ales and fun experimental ales, and lagers using as many locally sourced ingredients as possible.

Some of those ingredients will come from the farm’s fruit trees, berry bushes and beehives, while produce such as root vegetables, peppers and tomatoes will be grown in garden beds. Beer will be bottle conditioned in the barn, which the owners hope to open for events and dinners.

The barn houses 200 oak barrels, a coolship, and a few specially designed fermenters.

Harris Family Brewery

Partners Shaun Harris, Jerry “JT” Thomas and Tim White have reason to celebrate.

They recently raised more than $32,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to help their urban craft brewery - and the first black-owned craft brewery in Pennsylvania - become a reality.

“Our goal is within reach but we NEED your help to cross this finish line. We are still Independently owned and are still being laughed at by banks who don’t believe in the DREAM,” White wrote on the GoFundMe page.

The partners say the money will be used to pay for a final license and finish up a “few more brewery needs.”

Last year, they received zoning approval from Harrisburg for a 3,000 square-foot industrial building at 1721 Holly St. in Allison Hill, an area they describe as a “craft beer desert.”

Harris Family will first operate as a wholesale brewery as they sell to bars and restaurants. Eventually, they will search and develop a second spot for a taproom.

“One step into our taproom and you will be immersed in hip hop culture in an experience unlike any other craft brewery in Pennsylvania,” reads their website.

Hemauer Brewing Co.

1010 Wesley Drive, Mechanicsburg

“Pouring liquid art, one pint at a time" is the tagline.

The artisanal craft brewery recently opened a taproom with beer, a small menu, merchandise, Reading Soda Works sodas, snacks and Hot Heads Sauces. Pick from 16-ounce and 8-ounce cans for custom four-packs or flights to go.

Find it near Hunan Express Chinese Restaurant and Subway, and a few doors down from the Peppermill Diner.

Owner Brooks Hemauer started brewing at his home in Dillsburg and expanded production into a detached garage.

Hemauer carries traditional-styled and unique-flavored ales and lagers. Among the popular brews are NEIPA and an oatmeal stout, “Just The Tip” Spruce Brown Ale.

Howling Henry Brewery

Owner Greg Schertzer is hoping to open a new taproom at 35 E. Second St. in Hummelstown.

“I can say it will be open by mid-August for sure unless something crazy happens during the craziest year of our lives,” he said.

Howling Henry’s, named after his family’s 10-year-old pet Beagle, is housed in an unmarked warehouse in Hummelstown off of North Duke Street. Used dairy milk tanks purchased off of the Internet have been fashioned into fermenters and mash tuns.

The path toward Howling Henry's started with a wine kit Schertzer purchased. But he admitted he was quickly turned off by the extreme rules regarding sterilization with making wine. He feared he would mess up every batch and make people sick.

So he tossed out the wine kit and took a different path. He purchased a home brewing kit.

Lindgren Craft Brewery

Father-son team Clifford and Michael Lindgren are transforming a former bank in Duncannon into Lindgren Craft Brewery’s new taproom. They’ve been brewing beer on the family’s Penn Township farm in Perry County for several years.

Earlier this year, they announced they bought the historic Duncannon National Bank at 5 N. Market St. for the brewery/taproom.

The Lindgrens told the Perry County Times they are considering bringing an experienced restauranteur on as a partner so they can focus on brewing.

Six-packs of their beer are available exclusively at LindgrenBrewery.com/shop. The beers also are on tap at several restaurants including Mastracchio’s Restaurant & Lounge in Newport and Sorrento’s Bar & Lounge in Duncannon and sold at some beer distributors.

Rubber Soul

Rubber Soul Brewing Co.

The one-time Maryland-based brewery was sold to new partners, who are bringing the brand later this summer to Hummelstown.

Owners and Hummelstown residents Michael VanGavree, Joe Perkins and Michael Martini last year purchased Rubber Soul’s assets out of bankruptcy. It was started in 2015 by Steelton native Jesse Prall.

The new partners are in the midst of transforming a former borough building in the 100 block of South Hanover Street across from the Olde Antique Shop and Rita’s Italian Ice. They expect to open it in August.

They will brew some of Rubber Soul’s original recipes but the beers might taste slightly different due to brewing with water from Hummelstown.

A seven-barrel system will produce Rubber Soul beer for a 10-tap system, cans and crowlers. Head brewer is Donovan “Dono” Krebs, who previously worked at Manyunk Brewing Company, Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company and most recently at Levante Brewery in West Chester.

Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works

Tattered Flag in Middletown is expanding, again.

They’ve opened in Gettysburg and Hershey and had served beer last season at First Energy Stadium in in Reading. Up next, a barrel house at 1018 N. Christian St. in Lancaster.

The facility sits behind Station Square, located across from Amtrak’s Lancaster Station. Tattered Flag co-owner Pat Devlin said they have been working on the project for about a year and view Lancaster as a good market for expanding their clientele.

The barrel house will specialize in barrel-aged beers as well as spirits and non-aged beers. Devlin said they are considering a deli-style menu and will have seating inside the complex for between 50 and 60 guests.

Tied House Lititz

27-31 E. Main St., Lititz

St. Boniface Brewing in Ephrata recently landed a second location. It opened an outlet with a full-service restaurant at the former JoBoy’s Brewpub in Lititz.

Tied House, which borrows its name from the British system of brewery owned pubs, is open for limited dine-in and outdoor seating, as well as takeout. The menu is small with options for 8-ounce smashed burgers, street corn, wings, jerk tofu tacos and house-made hot pastrami sandwiches.

Of course, St. Boniface beer sells in crowlers, cans and full cases.

A basement space has an entrance off Main Street and is dubbed the Narthex. The second floor will be utilized as an event space.

St. Boniface will continue to brew and operate its Ephrata taproom. It was founded by Jonathon Northup and Michael Price in 2010. Partner Dain Shirey joined them in 2013.

The Watershed Pub

2129 Market St., Camp Hill

The Millworks Brewery is behind the latest project in Camp Hill, The Watershed Pub.

The neighborhood pub is close with an opening date announcement expected soon.

Owner Joshua Kesler announced the project at the former Creative Elegance Boutique in 2018. It will serve beer made at the Millworks in Harrisburg as well as Pennsylvania wine, beer and spirits to pair with a sustainable farm focused menu.

Renovations included expanding the porch and relocating a parking lot from the side to the rear of the building to create outdoor seating, Kesler said. In addition, he emphasized they preserved the architectural distinctiveness of the building, which dates back to the 1830s.

Kesler opened the Millworks in Midtown in 2015, and along with the restaurant, the facility houses a gallery and about two dozen leased artist studios. He opened the brewery and 165-seat rooftop biergarten in 2016.

Wolf Brewing Co.

Wolf Brewing Co. owners Elaine and Derek Wolf plan to open a brewery in Mechanicsburg.

Ground was recently broken for Wolf Brewing Co.

Brewery owners Derek and Elaine Wolf, who are active on the brewing circuit and have the hardware to prove it, will open a 8,000-square foot facility in the Market Square portion of Landmark Legacy Park in the borough. The facility is projected to open in February/March 2021.

It will encompass a brewery, taproom, lounge and kitchen with indoor seating for between 100 and 120 guests. In addition, guests can sit on an outdoor patio during warmer weather for special events and yard games.

The taproom will serve comfort food with a gourmet twist. About 24 taps will pour a wide variety of beer styles, while diners can order Pennsylvania ciders, meads, wines and spirits. Beer will be brewed on a 10-barrel system and cover traditional and non-traditional styles along with seasonal offerings.

ZeroDay Brewing Co.

It’s a big year for ZeroDay Brewing Company in Harrisburg.

Nearly five years after arriving in Midtown, ZeroDay has several projects in the works including a new taproom under construction at 925 N. Third St. The 150-capacity taproom will have “various indoor seating options and an outdoor courtyard,” as well as have an event room that holds up to 60 people.

A small-batch brewery will pump out options including those “dedicated barrel room for wood-aged and sour beers.” As for the food, Cork and Fork Osteria is joining the project with a Mexican/Tapas menu.

Meanwhile, ZeroDay is looking forward to opening a new lounge inside the Midtown Cinema with 10-stool bar and tables. The Midtown is undergoing a major renovation project which includes dedicated space for full scale brewing.

If that’s not enough, next year Zeroday owners said they are partnering with Shakedown BBQ for a project at the new Susquehanna Union Green Development in Susquehanna Township.
