If the air outside smells smoky, the culprit could be any number of the wildfires blazing across the Bay Area right now.
Dozens of fires, some small and some massive, are burning in nearly every Bay Area county as of Thursday morning. Because there are so many fires, the usual Cal Fire naming conventions have become quite confusing — three separate areas have fires named "Lightning Complex."
Multiple wildfires are burning in Napa and Sonoma counties with zero percent containment. Cal Fire is referring to them collectively as the LNU Lightning Complex. LNU stands for Cal Fire's Lake-Napa Unit. This fire has also now gone into Solano and Yolo counties, primarily affecting the neighborhoods on the western edge of Vacaville. The LNU Lightning Complex has now burned over 124,000 acres. It is 0% contained.
The biggest fires that started in Napa County are:
Hennessey Fire: Located near Hennessey Ridge Road and Chiles Pope Valley Road, east of St. Helena. This is also the fire that extended into Vacaville and Fairfield.
Gamble Fire: Centered around Berryessa Knoxville Road, west of the town of Brooks
Green (15-10) Fire: Located near Putah Creek Bridge and Berryessa Knoxville Road
Markley Fire: Near the Monticello Dam
Spanish Fire: Near Spanish Flat
The two primary fires in Sonoma County are:
Wallbridge Fire: Located west of Healdsburg
Myers Fire: Located north of Jenner
The CZU August Lightning Complex is burning across San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties. CZU stands for Cal Fire's San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit. It has burned 40,000 acres and is 0% contained. The biggest fires in this complex are:
5-15 Fire: Near N. Butano Truck Trail and Dearborn Park Road
5-18 Fire: Near N. Butano Truck Trail and China Grade Road
5-14 Fire: Near Olmo Truck Trail and Butano Fire Road
Waddell Fire: Near Old Coast Road and Highway 1
Warrenella Fire: Near Cement Plant Road and Highway 1
The SCU Lightning Complex covers 20 separate fires, is 5% contained, and has burned 137,000 acres in Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties. SCU stands for Cal Fire's Santa Clara Unit. Within this complex are three zones.
Deer Zone: Round Fire, Palm Fire, Marsh Fire, Briones Fire in Contra Costa County
Calaveras Zone: Kilkare Fire, Arroyo Fire, Mill Creek Fire, Welch Fire, Ohlone Fire, Reservoir Fire in Alameda, Santa Clara and Stanislaus counties
Canyon Zone: Peg Leg Fire, Terraville Fire, Del Puerto Fire, Peach Fire in San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties
In addition, an 1,500-acre brush fire is burning in Point Reyes National Seashore. Cal Fire says 1,620 structures are threatened and it is 0% contained.
