White House adviser Jared Kushner said President Donald Trump is in a better position now to win the election compared to 2016.
“We’re very confident we’re in much better shape now than we were in 2016,” Kushner said Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation”.
“We have over a million and a half volunteers in the field [and] 1,500 paid staff on board,” he said adding that “we’re claiming states that we didn’t win last time we think we have a great opportunity.”
Kushner said he wasn’t worried about Trump supporters being unable to vote despite the U.S. Postal Service warning that it could not guarantee that mail-in ballots across 46 states will arrive in time to be counted for the upcoming presidential election,
Democratic lawmakers have called for $25 billion worth of funding for the USPS to overcome the issues that would otherwise prevent millions of Americans from having their mail-in votes properly counted. Trump said last week that if the USPS doesn’t receive those funds, it won’t be able to handle the expected influx of mail-in ballots.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is considering cutting short the August recess to consider stand alone legislation aimed at making sure the Postal Service is prepared to handle the expected increase in mail-in voting in November.
White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Trump would sign off on increasing USPS funding by $10 billion to $25 billion if Democratic lawmakers agreed to other measures such as a second round of stimulus checks . Left out of the White House offer is aid to cash-strapped state and local government, which is a priority for Pelosi.
Separately, Kushner said that he will be sending his children back to school for in-person learning this fall and has “no fear in doing so.”
“Children have a six times higher chance to die from the flu than from the coronavirus so based on the data I’ve seen I don’t believe that that’s a risk,” Kushner said.
Scott Gottlieb, former commission of the Food and Drug Administration, questioned where Kushner got the statistic that flu was “six times” as lethal as coronavirus.
“I think we need to be careful about making comparisons to flu and the death and disease we see in flu relative to COVID. There is a lot we don’t understand about COVID and kids,” Gottlieb, said on CBS.
