NEW ULM — Friday morning 1st Street North between Broadway and Minnesota Street was closed for the annual Oktoberfest Craft & Vendor Show.
This is the 6th annual Oktoberfest craft fair. It will continue at 10 a.m. Saturday with even more street vendors. The event will return for the second weekend of Oktoberfest as well.
Event organizer James Haviland said the craft fair was very popular. Sales were strong during last year’s Oktoberfest. With so many restrictions, the open-air market was a rare chance for craft sellers to open booths.
This year, Duy Tran’s “Wonder Paper Art” was once again a highlight of the craft show. Tran’s table was full of complex pop-up greeting cards. The paper cards popped up into flowers, buildings and animals. Tran said his signature pop-up card was a dragonfly and was one of his best sellers.
Other vendors sold seasonal food products. Schlei Pickles brought dozens of jars of pickles, fresh bread and jams. The products were sold by Andrea Schleii of Lamberton, who takes custom orders. On Friday, Schlei’s jams and jelly were selling the best but her hot vegetable medley was nearly sold out about 2 p.m. Schlei Pickles will be returning to the craft show Saturday and next weekend.
Haviland expected a stronger showing on Saturday, which historically has more customers. WIth Oktoberfest returning to New Ulm in full force foot traffic is expected to be high.
“We’re just excited to be back,” he said.
