Former Pacific Grove and Monterey Peninsula College quarterback Tom Craft has been named the American Community College Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year at Riverside City College.

Craft, a former head coach at San Diego State, took Riverside to a 13-0 record this past fall, guiding the program to its first state title in 30 years.

In 10 seasons at Riverside, Craft is 102-15. He is the first community college football coach to win 100 plus games for two different schools, having achieved the feat at Palomar College.

Craft won nine conference titles and three state championships at Palomar. He has won nine conference titles at Riverside, capturing 10 bowl games and a state title.

Craft has made a record 20 straight postseason appearances as a community college head coach. Last fall he was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year.

Johnson on the hardwood in Russia

Former Palma product and NBA guard Orlando Johnson is playing overseas for the Avtodor Saratov basketball team in the VTB United League in Russia.

The 6-foot-5 Johnson is averaging 14 points per game through the team’s first eight games. The 30-year-old is logging 24 minutes a game, dishing out 2.4 assists and grabbing 4.1 rebounds a night.

A second-round selection by the Sacramento Kings in 2012 before being traded to Indiana, Johnson spent his first two seasons in the NBA with the Pacers.

Johnson, who played college basketball at UC Santa Barbara, also had short stints with the Kings, the Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Pelicans.

Dixon receives wrestling award

Monterey High wrestling coach Roberto Dixon has been named the National Federation of High Schools California Wrestling Coach of the Year.

Dixon has been involved with the boys and girls wrestling programs at Monterey for over 25 years, having coached several kids to the state championships.

“Coach Dixon is a walking pillar in the community and this honor is fitting,” Monterey principal Tom Newton said.

Bouyea continues breakout season at USF

Point guard Jamaree Bouyea is no longer sliding under the radar. Yet, he continues to put up career numbers in every statistical category for the University of San Francisco men’s basketball team.

The 6-foot-3 junior guard is second on the Dons in scoring at 13.3 points, and leads them in assists (76), steals (30), blocks (16) and minutes played (33.2).

Bouyea, who led Palma to a spot in the CIF State Division IV finals in 2016, is also shooting 53.2 percent from the field, 33 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.

Last season, Bouyea came off the bench in every game for the Dons, averaging just over six points a night. He has already established career highs in every statistical category — 19 games into the year.

Allen finding the floor in the NBA’s G-League

After a short stint playing professionally overseas, Noah Allen has returned to the Washington Wizards’ G-League affiliate Capital City.

In 22 games, the 6-foot-7 swingman is averaging 18 minutes a game for the Go-Go, producing a pair of double-doubles, scoring a season-high 19 points against Fort Wayne.

On the season, Allen is averaging 5.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals in his second season for the Go-Go.

Allen was a four-year starter and two-time Herald Player of the Year at Palma. He spent three years at UCLA, before finishing his collegiate career earning all-conference honors at Hawaii.

He has also played for the Warriors (2017) and Wizards (2019) Summer League teams in Las Vegas.

Trotter making waves in the water at St. Norbert

Matt Trotter has made a splash in the pool in his first season for the St. Norbert College men’s swimming team in De Pere, Wisconsin.

The true freshman was recently named the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week after winning the 50 free and 100 free, and finishing second in a relay.

Trotter, who prepped at Carmel High, was clocked in 22.27 seconds in the 50 free and 49.77 in the 100.

Earlier this month, Trotter was part of the Green Knights’ 400 medley relay team that shattered the school record.

Trotter closed 2019 with a rush for St. Norbert, setting school records in the 100 butterfly (50.92) and 200 fly (1:55.74). He has a season-best of 47.44 in the 100 free.
