Craft marijuana growing facility proposed at John and Joe Florist in Streator - LaSalle News Tribune

The operators of John and Joe Florist in Streator are proposing to add a 16,000 square foot building to their property at 1105 W. Main St. to grow medical marijuana.

Craig Bodznick and his wife, Jody, have submitted an application and paid the application fee with hopes of becoming a craft marijuana business. 

A hearing in front of the Streator Plan Commission is scheduled 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at City Hall, 204 S. Bloomington St. The Plan Commission will make recommendations to the City Council, which has final approval.

A craft grower is a smaller operation that cannot sell marijuana out of it’s own business. It can only sell to other growers and cultivation centers, which can then distribute to dispensaries. A craft grower may cultivate, dry, cure, and package marijuana and perform other necessary activities to make it available for sale at a dispensing organization or use at a processor. No sales of marijuana will take place at the proposed facility.

State applications for craft grower licenses became available Jan. 7 on the Illinois Department of Agriculture's website. License applications will be submitted to the agency between Feb. 14 and March 16. The state will award up to 40 licenses on or before July 1. By Dec. 21, the state will issue up to 60 additional licenses.

Streator officials are recommending the project.

The hearing will follow guidelines laid out by the Plan Commission and approved by the City Council for marijuana businesses. All marijuana businesses are required to file for a special use permit.

The building will be added to the south of the existing greenhouse. Three additional employees are expected to be hired and operation of the craft growing facility is expected to occur during the nursery's existing hours.
