Family craft: Boost your luck with leprechaun hats and rainbow daisies - Duluth News Tribune

We recently had guests over, so the rare but recognizable smell from the coffee pot immediately brought my husband back to sitting around his grandma’s small, round kitchen table with the familiar aroma filling the air. He recalled how in that tiny room, where masterpiece meals were a regular occurrence, he would look up at the wall to a sign that proudly stated, “If you’re lucky enough to be Irish, you’re lucky enough!”

Just like Grandma Olive, his Irish pride continued — as it does with so many Americans. According to a recent study, 32.6 million United States residents said they have Irish heritage, six times more than the current population of Ireland. It’s also scientifically observable that the number of Irish Americans swells to nearly 10 times that amount every year, right around the middle of March.

This year to remember, honor and celebrate, these two activities may put a little Irish pride in your heart, getting you right into the spirit of Patty’s (as my husband calls it).

First is a leprechaun’s hat, holding golden treats and second is a daisy rainbow because we all know the treasure is at the end of the rainbow.

Instructions:

Rummage through your cupboard to find a drinking glass with a diameter that is approximately 3½ inches across. Depending on what you find, you can fudge this measurement and adjust the other pieces accordingly.

Placing the cup upside down, trace it on your green foam. Cut along your markings.

Cut a strip from the green foam with the dimension of 7x2 inches.

Grabbing your glittery gold foam, cut a 1x1 inche square. Using your knife and cutting board, cut two half-inch slices for the ribbon to weave through, creating the buckle.

Measure your black ribbon to be 7½ inches and cut.

The gold foam that I found had a sticker backing, which helps keep the buckle in place. So, slide the ribbon through the buckle and take off the backing.

Place the buckle so that it is lined up with the long edge of the foam rectangle and centered in the middle.

Warm up the glue gun and flip your green foam strip over. Wrap the ribbon edges over to the other side and secure them with hot glue.

Secure the two short ends of the strip together using scotch tape. Further secure the connection with a very thin strip of glue in the crack.

Carefully put glue along the bottom of the ring, place it on the brim of the hat to finish it off.

Fill your creation with golden treats. These festive crafts can be made for classmates, co-workers, family members and more.

Rainbow Daisies

Materials:

Seven cups

Water

Food coloring

Fresh daisies

Scissors

Do you remember changing the color of white daisies in science class? Transpiration is the process of water movement through a plant, which can be demonstrated when food coloring is added to the water. Water evaporates through the petals, and the color stays.

Line up your glasses and add water to each.

Place 3-5 drops of color in each glass in order: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet (Remember ROY G. BIV?) To get orange, mix red and yellow. You can also purchase neon food coloring to get colors close to violet and indigo. I mixed the neon blue and purple to get indigo.

Place a daisy in each glass and let the transpiration begin. Kids and adults are intrigued to check the daisies throughout each day to see the progress!

However you choose to spend St. Patrick’s Day, “may the kindness you spread keep returning to you.”
