Vermont tailors gear up to craft coronavirus masks — just in case - Burlington Free Press

If regulation, virus-proof facemasks become scarce in Vermont, a group of tailors in Chittenden County are poised to craft emergency replacements.

The local offer to create home-stitched, tight-weave cotton masks, said Burlington photographer and seamstress Carolyn Bates, follows global concerns over supplies of N95 facemasks, which are proven effective against the spread of airborne transmission of COVID-19.

Bates, who has been sewing since she was seven (her mother was a professional seamstress) has already created several facemasks from a relatively simple pattern of pleated fabric, elastic straps and a mold-able piece that keeps a tight fit over the nose.

Such masks should only be used as "a last resort" by health care workers tending patients with COVID-19 symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Possible inventory shortages have prompted Dartmouth-Hitchcock hospital in New Hampshire to solicit locally sourced facemasks, Bates noted.

That hospital includes design guidelines and links to an instructional video on its website.

So far, the University of Vermont Medical Center has no need for the donations, said hospital spokesman Neal Goswami on Tuesday.

"What we are asking for is that people take social distancing measures seriously," Goswami wrote in an email, "and continue to practice good hygiene to help stop the spread of the virus."

The offer remains open, said Burlington City Councilor Joan Shannon, D-South District, who is also a tailor. Shannon is waiting for the go-ahead (and design specifications) from the hospital before setting up an assembly line.
