Waco: Craft breweries petitioning to deliver beer to customers - KWTX

WACO, Texas (KWTX) Brotherwell Brewing in Waco had to get creative once their tap room was closed after a mandate by the State of Texas effectively closed all dining areas and bars due to coronavirus concerns.

“We supply bars and restaurants all around McLennan County with beer, and with all of them shutting down and with us being disallowed from selling on site for consumption here, that's put us in a real crisis point as a business,” said Brotherwell Co-Owner, David Stoneking

Brotherwell set up tents and taps outside, and hoped that people would come and grab one of their favorite local brews.

“So we saw on Facebook that they were doing drive-thru flights,” said Taylor Jones, a Hewitt resident. “So we said ‘let’s do it’, there is nothing else to do.”

All other local breweries are also open for takeout, but it may not be enough to keep them afloat. While Governor Abbott signed a waiver allowing restaurants to sell and deliver alcohol to go, as long as it came with a meal, that didn't apply to breweries and brew pubs. So the Texas Craft Brewers Guild started a petition asking Governor Abbott to allow breweries to deliver beer to their patrons.

“I mean there is really no harm in it right,” said Jones. “If you're driving up here.”

“If I could deliver beer to our neighbors in McLennan County, that would not only keep our business open, it would give employees hours that they can clock in,” said Stoneking. “It would give us a way to get beer in the hands of our customers. Without them having to go out in public or go into crowded places.”
