CHANNAHON, IL —Bars and restaurants have been hit the hardest since Gov. J.B. Pritzker ordered these businesses off-limits to Illinoisans amid the new coronavirus outbreak. It's approaching four weeks since Channahon's River Hawk Brewing had to adjust on the fly.
River Hawk had to change its business model, its philosophy, for the indefinite future, all on the spur of the moment.
With April here, River Hawk wants everyone to know it remains open daily, producing quality craft beers and wines. Unlike most microbreweries in Will County, River Hawk makes bottled wine. River Hawk is nestled along U.S. Route 6 in the Mallory Plaza. If you're traveling from Joliet or getting off at the Channahon exit for Interstate 55, it's right past the Dollar General store.
For a small-town brewery, River Hawk has amassed more than 4,500 Facebook likes and more than 4,700 Facebook followers. Not too shabby for a microbrewery that is coming up on its third anniversary in July.
Of all the microbreweries in the Will County area, River Hawk is one of the nicest, both on the inside and outside. And that's what makes this coronavirus outbreak so sad for small businesses. River Hawk's spacious sit-down brewery can't be accessed by its faithful for the time being.
Head brewer Zach Sutton told Patch he started at River Hawk in February.
"I just like working with beer, and it's a good environment to work in," he remarked.
Two local families operate River Hawk: Tom and Deb Sperling and Dustin and Jenny Fryman.
River Hawk features several craft beers on tap including: If We Build It, which was a collaboration of several Will County breweries, Ol' Bear Hands, River Porter, Waxwing, Thunderbird, Mangerine, The Patriot, Ancient Allen, Eye of the Beholder, Sidious, Heffe Yeah and Yellow Jacket.
There's even beer blends.
River Hawk's wine list includes: Sweet Blueberry, Barrel Aged Blueberry, Blue Aged Blueberry, Barrel-Aged Chancellor Red, Seyval and Vidal Blanc.
"We have a real variety on tap all the time," Deb Sperling told Patch's Editor. "And, we have the bottled wine on tap, which is a good alternative for non-beer drinkers."
River Hawk is staying open for pickup orders from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday-through Thursday, 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, noon to 7 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 3 p.m. on Sundays during the coronavirus outbreak.
The actual address is 24735 W. Eames St.
For the time being, River Hawk is offering some great specials: buy two crowlers and get a third one free. Buy three wine bottles and got a fourth wine bottle free.
"We have a little something for everybody," Deb Sperling told Patch.
And during these challenging times for locally owned bars and restaurants, Channahon's microbrewery does not feel isolated.
"We have a good support (network) where people are coming in daily," she said. Locally, "pretty much everybody supports a small business such as us. That's appreciated. Without that, we couldn't afford to stay open. We have a really good customer base."
Besides Channahon, River Hawk draws its share of regulars from Minooka, Shorewood and Joliet.
"We had someone come out from Schaumburg just the other wday," Sperling said. "It's a community business and even though we're in Channahon, we still get people from Shorewood and Joliet to come out here."
River Hawk's Facebook page shows a sterling ranking of 4.8 stars out of 5 and more than 5,400 Facebook check-ins by customers who are savvy with social media.
The microbrewery's phone is 815-255-2202. The River Hawk Brewing website is here.
River Hawk, as well as Chapin's East, were among the first businesses to take advantage of the Channahon-Minooka Patch's call out for local small businesses in the area to fill out Patch's simple online survey regarding their hours of operations and other pertinent information.
If you're a Channahon or Minooka area business that has not done so, please considering filling out Patch's online form here.
