Crafting is a fun, relaxing pastime. That is, unless you don't have any instructions. This is what our guests have to deal with on our new series, Crafts and Q’s. In the first episode, legendary investigative reporter Lisa Guerrero tackles the felt flower craft kit we sent her while answering our questions. As someone with an extremely stressful job, Guerrero has found ways to unwind through creative outlets. So while she claims that she's no expert with felt or a glue gun, she still manages to DIY a pretty flower garland as she talks about traveling, what makes her feel most at home, and what she thinks of Tiger King's Joe Exotic. Tune in above and read on for her answers.
How do you unwind at the end of the day?
My career as an investigative journalist is very stressful, and the thing that I have recognized about myself is that I need some kind of artistic outlet. And so I do mosaic art. So I’ve done really big pieces and some really small pieces, too, like this little coaster.
Is there anywhere you haven’t traveled to that you’d love to visit?
So I have been really blessed in my career. I’ve traveled all over the country. I’ve been to every state except Alaska. So if there’s any bad guys in Alaska, look out.
What is the strangest situation you have ever been in for a story?
There have been a lot of them. I was doing a story once about these illegal cock fights, and I was on location in Alabama. And I soon found myself getting run out of that barn in the middle of nowhere by a bunch of guys with shotguns. But I’m trying to interview the guy in charge of it, and it was pretty hairy. That was the first time I’d ever had a gun pulled on me, or the first time I’d ever seen a gun as a journalist.
What do you wish you had known when you were starting out in your career?
One of the things I wish I knew about when I was first starting my career was how much time it takes to actually get a story on the air. We have worked on some stories for over a year. And the other thing I didn’t know was how many stories I’m working on at the same time. So at any given time, I’m juggling different aspects of about six or seven different investigations with three different producers.
How have you seen people persevere during the COVID-19 outbreak?
So we are living in this really chaotic time right now, and the one thing that I've learned as a journalist covering this pandemic is how amazing people have been when it comes to taking care of each other. We have learned how to band together, how to communicate using technology better, how to care about each other.
What makes you feel most at home?
The thing that makes me feel most at home is when I get home from an investigation and I am able to unpack. I love the feeling of coming home and seeing my dog, Cupcake, and— believe it or not—doing laundry, and doing the mundane things around the house. I just, I love being at home, and I love just knowing that I’ve built my own nest here.
What TV show are you loving right now?
The show that I’m watching right now on TV that I cannot get enough of is called The Valhalla Murders. I like suspense, murder mysteries, thrillers, court room dramas, all of it. I love all that stuff. But I’m going to admit something right now. I’m not proud to say it, but I watched all of Tiger King, and I was obsessed with it. And why was I obsessed with it? you might ask. I interviewed Joe Exotic ten years ago for Inside Edition, and that interview was bananas. And we were investigating him because 23 tiger cubs died in his custody back then. And so we went undercover to see what he was doing with his operation. So I did an interview with him, and it was chippy. Chippy. That guy, I think, in my humble opinion, is right where he belongs.
