Discovery+ has greenlit a new series that will pit some of the best American artisans against one another in head-to-head competition.
Meet Your Makers Showdown is a new six-episode series that will test arts and crafts enthusiasts on their creativity, skill and passion. The series will be hosted by Emmy-nominated actress Chrissy Metz. Four contestants will compete in challenges in each episode, judged by Metz, expert designer Mark Montano, Grammy-winning singer LeAnn Rimes and a special guest judge each episode.
The series is produced by Michael Levitt Productions. Executive producers on the series include Levitt, Jill Goularte and Mary Celenza.
Each episode’s winner will receive a US$10,000 prize. The artistic categories covered in this series include paper art, fluid painting, stained glass, polymer clay, candle making and artisan soap.
The series will be available to stream later this year.
“Meet Your Makers Showdown spotlights the nation’s obsession with handcrafted goods as featured in the countless viral videos and tutorials exploding on social media,” said Jane Latman, president, HGTV, in a news release. Her team also greenlights home content for Discovery+.
Discovery+ has also announced it will air the new true crime series, Relentless, which will have three episodes available for streaming on June 28, with new episodes following every Monday.
The series was created after filmmaker Christina Fontana met the mother of 21-year-old Christina Whittaker, while she was filming a documentary about the families of missing persons. Whittaker had disappeared in Hannibal, MO, leaving behind a six-month-old daughter. Fontana was moved by the mother’s determination to find her daughter eight months after her disappearance, and this six-episode series digs into that search.
“It’s rare that a documentarian becomes part of the story she’s trying to tell, and Christina Fontana has risked her career and her personal safety to bring this story to light,” said Lisa Holme, group SVP, content and commercial strategy, for Discovery+, in a news release today (May 27).
“This series is an extraordinary achievement for her directorial debut and we are proud to introduce this incredible story and talented filmmaker to our passionate true crime audience.”
The series is produced by Blumhouse Television with Stick Figure Entertainment. Fontana will serve as director and executive producer on the project. Executive producers for Blumhouse also include Jason Blum, Chris McCumber, Jeremy Gold and Mary Lisio. Jamie Schutz and Steven Cantor are executive producers for Stick Figure. George Moll will serve as showrunner and executive producer, and Amanda Spain and Noah Moskin are also executive producers on the series.
