Each spring as players hit the grassroots circuit, we see players break out and as a result their recruitments take off. So far this cycle, three-star shooting guard Kam Craft is fitting that description.
A 6-foot-5 junior at Buffalo Grove (Ill.) High, Craft has been outstanding this spring playing for Chicago based Meanstreets and his stock is soaring.
“I’m playing on a really good team with a lot of talented guys," Craft told 247Sports. "We play really well together, and our chemistry keeps getting better as we go along. So far for this team I’ve been able to shoot the ball well from all three levels and come off of ball screens and be a high-level scorer.
“Something I’ve been working on a lot is getting to the rim more effectively and I think that is been helping me a lot.”
Skilled, athletic and with great positional size, Craft has impressed with his ability to knock down shots from deep or finish above the rim in traffic. He has an edge to the way he plays and has now added high major offers from Iowa, NC State, South Carolina and Texas Tech in the last month. Prior to that, Nebraska had taken the plunge.
He discussed each of those programs.
Iowa: “I really like their style of play. They say that I could really fit into their system as a shooter and they’ve had a bunch of players that I play like. I had a good talk with Fran McCaffery and the assistants and I’m excited to know more about them.”
NC State: “I had actually been talking to them for a while and then coach Kevin Keatts facetimed me and offered me a scholarship. That’s ACC basketball and that’s a a conference that I’ve always looked up to so I’m excited about that one.”
Nebraska: “I have a really good relationship with the assistants there and Fred Hoiberg. I like their NBA playing style and they’ve showed me certain things where I would fit into their style.”
South Carolina: “I really like Frank Martin’s mentality. He’s going to discipline you and has a defensive mindset that makes me really excited to learn more about his program and get to know him better.”
Texas Tech: “I actually work out with Matt Mooney a lot so that’s my connection with Texas Tech. I’ve had a good talk with an assistant there and I’m looking forward to getting to know them more.”
With much of his recruiting attention being so recent, Craft's head is spinning a bit and he's doing his best to soak it all in. He's in no rush to make any kind of decision and is very much looking forward to getting on college campuses and establishing real, one on one, connections.
“I’ve just started getting a lot of offers in the last few weeks, so it has all be really fast moving," said Craft. "Once everything slows down, that’s when I think I’ll sit down and make a list.
“I just want to build a relationship in person. It is kind of hard to do that over the phone and with zoom calls. I’m excited to get to take visits and meet coaches.”
