WAYNE, NJ — Seton Hall University is the latest New Jersey college that now requires all students and employees to be vaccinated for the fall 2021 semester. The catholic university in South Orange joins a list of now fourteen major NJ institutions to require inoculation in some form before the start of the 2021-2022 school year.

The other thirteen NJ schools are: Drew University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Kean University, Montclair State University, Mount St. Mary’s University, New Jersey City University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Rider University, Rowan University, Rutgers University, Stevens Institute of Technology, Stockton University.

In Wayne, William Paterson University has not yet made any public announcement that it will also require students and staff to be vaccinated. Yet hundreds of colleges and universities across the U.S. are mandating the vaccine for faculty and students with some exemptions for religion or medical reasons, according to University Business, a news organization for higher learning. That list continues to grow.

The Seton Hall community was notified of the University's Executive Cabinet decision via an email from administration sent earlier this week.

“We know that reaching a high vaccination level in our University population is an important factor in achieving the primarily in-person fall semester we are planning,” the email said.

“Widespread vaccinations provide the clearest and shortest path to resuming activities we enjoy. Yesterday’s CDC announcement is a vivid reminder of the benefits that come with being vaccinated. For weeks, the HICT has strongly encouraged all members of the University community to get vaccinated and has provided information on vaccination locations. Last month’s survey responses, which were received from fully one third of our community, showed that 90 percent of respondents are partially or fully vaccinated, or plan to get vaccinated.”

The school's mission, of which “love of neighbor is at the heart,” was invoked. “We care for one another — and for the communities of which we are a part. The choice to be vaccinated, as Pope Francis has noted, is an act of loving concern for the health and safety of those around us.”

“Having a high vaccination level among our community members (students, faculty, clergy, staff, and administrators) — and being able to document it — is vitally important. Therefore, the University is requiring every member of the Seton Hall community to be fully vaccinated prior to the start of the fall 2021 semester, subject to exemptions for religious beliefs, pre-existing health conditions, or personal reasons while COVID-19 vaccines are authorized on an emergency-use basis.”

Seton Hall will also be “requiring each member of our University community to complete a Confidential Vaccine Declaration,” to “assess the immunization level in our community,” the announcement said.
