What's next for Sean Payton now that he's leaving Saints? - Chron

Sean Payton stepped down as head coach of the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday. The 58-year-old Payton went 152-82 in 15 seasons with the Saints and led the franchise to its first Super Bowl title, and now he jumps to the top of the wish list of every fan whose team is looking for a head coach.

Payton would have plenty of suitors, including from multiple television networks, according to ESPN

"Honestly, as I sit here today, and this is OK, I don't know what's next," Payton said at a press conference Tuesday. "I read the reports, but I have not spoken to anyone from a media outlet relative to doing television or radio. Maybe that opportunity arises, but every time I read something that says, 'He's in line for this job,' I'll call my agent Don (Yee) and I'll say, 'Don, did you hear something, because I have not heard anything.' And, that's OK. I think I'd like to do that. I think I'd be pretty good at it."

It would be tough for Payton to immediately step into another coaching job, because he's under contract with the Saints. Any team wanting to hire Payton this offseason would need to work out a trade with New Orleans.

On Tuesday, Payton said he didn't plan on coaching in 2022, but couldn't rule it out down the road.

"I still have a vision for doing things in football and I'll be honest with you, that might be coaching again at some point," Payton said. "I don't think it's this year. I think maybe in the future, but that's not where my heart is right now. It's not at all."

If Payton takes a year off from coaching, that rules out the eight teams - Texans, Broncos, Bears, Giants, Jaguars, Vikings, Raiders and Dolphins - currently looking for a head coach.

The Cowboys still have Mike McCarthy as their leader, but could they be interested next offseason if Payton decides he wants to return to the sidelines then? Or would they be willing to make a trade for Payton?

It wouldn't be unheard for the Cowboys - or any other team - to work out a trade with the Saints so that Payton can become their head coach immediately.

In 2000, the Patriots were able to hire Bill Belichick away from the Jets by giving them their first-round pick (No. 16 overall) and a fourth- and seventh-rounder, in exchange for Belichick and a fifth- and a seventh-round pick.

In 1997, the Jets sent the Patriots four draft picks – a 1997 third- and fourth-round pick, a 1998 second-round pick and a 1999 first-round pick – for the rights to Bill Parcells.

The Payton-to-Cowboys rumors seem to surface every few years, because it's well-known that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is fond of Payton, who was the Cowboys' assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach from 2003 to 2005 before he landed the head coaching job in New Orleans.
