Llamas Online | Museum streams craft class - Texarkana Gazette

With just some wooden rods, yarn, beads and paper, the things one can craft are amazing.

Texarkana Museum System President Velvet Cool and curator Jamie Simms, along with Makayla the stuffed llama, demonstrated that craft magic with those simple ingredients. "We found a book full of llama knowledge and craft projects based around llamas," Cool said. "Plus, we love llamas here and love to share them with our audience."

The first class was held Friday afternoon, and they intend the llama classes to take place on a weekly basis. The time of the class, however, may move around.

"This is a way to bring the museum system to the public," Cool said. "The museum staff and board has worked really hard to increase awareness and attendance in our museums. Our attendance was up and folks were coming to see us when COVID-19 hit.

We want to make sure that awareness is maintained and we get through this."

"People were watching the Llama class, one as far away as Ruston, Louisiana, and one from Dallas, Texas," Simms said. "The online approach is new for us but it is something we will continue doing even when the crisis is over with. This is a new way we can share with the public, hold classes and put things out there."

"In the meantime, while folks are having to stay indoors, we can help keep minds active and educated, help keep our audience mentally limber," Cool said.
