The big games keep on coming for Real Madrid, who take on Atletico Madrid in a local derby on Saturday just three days after drawing with Barcelona in the Copa del Rey. Los Blancos have the slight advantage over their Clasico rivals in that semi-final tie, but they are playing catch-up to both Barca and Atletico in the La Liga table. R eal have shown signs of getting back to their best after a tumultuous season, though, and victory at the Wanda Metropolitano this weekend would see them leapfrog their city rivals into second place. Gareth Bale will hope to be involved in the derby, and here Sports Mole looks at how the Welshman has fared against Atletico in the past.
Should he be selected on Saturday then it will be Bale's 19th meeting with Atletico, but his record against Real's local rivals is by no means his best. The former Tottenham Hotspur winger's only goal in this fixture came in 2014, although it was an important one as he capped the end of his first s eason at the club by scoring in the all-Madrid Champions League final. It remains one of Bale's most memorable Madrid moments, although he has failed to score in each of his 17 other meetings with Atletico and Real have gone on to lose six of those. Indeed, Bale has only tasted victory against Atletico once in nine La Liga meetings, although he is also unbeaten in his last five top-flight editions of this fixture. The Wales international does fare better when it comes to assists, having registered seven in his 18 meetings, the most recent of which helped Real to a point at the Bernabeu last season. Interestingly, Bale has never been on the winning side against Atletico at the Bernabeu, with his four victories being comprised of two away and two on neutral territory in Champions League finals.
