The Norwegian joined United in mid-December with the club 11 points adrift of fourth spot and 19 off table-toppers Liverpool. Fast forward eight weeks and it is only the success of their arch rivals that you will hear the Old Trafford faithful gripe about. Solskjaer, recruited on an idiosyncratic managerial loan from Molde until the end of the season, arrived with every intention of restoring United's core values. The 45-year-old has done that and more, with United now sitting fourth, in the fifth round of the FA Cup and fancying their chances against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday night. Solskjaer's success has seen him become odds-on favourite for the full-time role ahead of Mauricio Pochettino, with The Baby-Faced Assassin winning his 10th game out of 11 in charge against Fulham last Saturday. But former team-mate and fellow club legend Neville believes the board should keep their powder dry for the time being, as an impending month during which games against PSG, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City beckons. "My personal view is still, wait until March," Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast. "I don't think there's any real reason to rush it and make that announcement today. "And that's not because Manchester United have got seven or eight tough games in this next month. "I just think it's sensible to reflect over a three-, four-month period. "But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is putting himself in with a major shout of getting the job. "I'm looking at it from an owner's point of view and thinking 'if Manchester United continue in the vein they are towards the end of the season, playing the way they are, get into the top four... "The risk of not giving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the job is huge. "If, next October, they've spent £30-40million to get a manager and a new manager and a new coaching set-up into the club, and they're in fifth, all hell will break loose." Let's block ads!
