LOGAN SQUARE — A market showcasing handmade crafts made by Latino moms is back in Logan Square this weekend.
The market, called Mercaditos, is set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Paseo Prairie community garden, 2600 N. Kedzie Ave.
It’s the first market of the season for Mercaditos, which is in its fourth year. The markets are usually held throughout the summer, but this year’s plans had to be delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, said organizer Araceli Carrillo.
Saturday’s market will bring together about 10 vendors selling handmade candles, jewelry, Mexican clothing and more.
Most of the vendors are mothers trying to bring in extra cash to support their families.
“It’s been a really tough moment,” Carrillo said.
Carrillo wants to host two more markets in September but is waiting to see if it will be safe to do so amid the pandemic before finalizing more dates.
At Saturday’s market, shoppers and vendors will be required to wear masks and practice social distancing.
“This time is different. It’s a different market,” Carrillo said.
Carrillo started hosting markets about four years ago after realizing Logan Square, the neighborhood she’s called home since she was 16, didn’t have a regular craft fair dedicated to Mexican crafts and treats.
She launched a group, called Mujeres Artesanas con Carrillo, to showcase the work of crafty women she meets, many of them moms.
“I feel like I’m doing something for my friends — for moms like me who maybe need extra cash,” Carrillo previously said.
