Lately, I’ve been hearing a lot about “empathy.”
What is empathy? It is “walking in the shoes of another.” Empathy has been a guiding principle of my life, hard to live by, but worthwhile all the same.
As a teacher of parents, I taught this concept through practice. I asked parents to imagine being 2, being 12, being 18. No wonder toddlers and teens have tantrums! I also asked children and teens to imagine being their own parent. What would it feel like? What would you say, do? No wonder parents have tantrums!
Now, for me, the tables have turned -- and self-empathy has kicked in. Though I’ve often heard about countries ruled by authoritarian leaders -- North Korea, China, Russia -- I could not imagine what that would feel like as their residents.
Now, I’m starting to understand. Now, I’m scared. Now, I’m fearful. Where is my own country headed? My freedoms are challenged daily by the man who seeks re-election. What will happen next, if he wins?
I encourage everyone to vote, and to think well before you vote. Ask yourself, “What does it feel like to walk in the shoes of those residents living in authoritarian government?”
Let’s transform tantrums into positive action, before it is too late.
