Plan ahead for Aug. 26-Sept. 1: A drive-up concert in Viera, craft beer at Sea World - Florida Today

Switcheroo

Singers switch roles to give Space Coast Symphony’ Orchestra’s Broadway Gender Bender a unique perspective.

The concert, set for 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 29, at The Avenue Viera, features a cadre of professional vocalists from Winter Park-based Central Florida Vocal Arts. Note this is a drive-in concert, the final in the Symphony’s summer series of plein air performances.

Filled with popular songs from the Great White Way, plus a smattering of opera’s most recognizable tunes, Broadway Gender Bender showcases the musical talent of mezzo soprano Morgan Davis, sopranos Sarah Stead and Desiree Montes, baritones Jacob Pence and David Bracamonte and tenor Bryan Hayes.

The program includes selections from the Sound of Music, Mamma Mia, Les Misérables, My Fair Lady, Man of La Mancha, Gilbert & Sullivan's Mikado and Pirates of Penzance, plus more.

"This playful concert not only challenges your musical expectations, but it really delivers, said Symphony artistic director Aaron Collins, who will conduct the orchestra.

“No matter who is singing what, it's music we all love, performed by six incredible professionals.”

As for logistics, musicians from the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra will play their instruments safely separated from each other, while concert attendees can remain in their cars and tune their radios to the live feed, or set up their own seating next to their vehicles.

A twin performance takes place at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 28, at the parking area of Pathway Church, 1105 58th. Avenue, Vero Beach.

Tickets are $10 per person or $25 per carful of adults at SpaceCoastSymphony.org. Admission is free for those 18 and younger or with a student ID.  Advance online ticket sales are encouraged to help limit social interaction with parking attendants.

Although the orchestra's usual robust year-round performances have been significantly curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the success of the drive-in summer series has presented a way forward for the innovative musical organization and the Symphony will be performing out of doors through December, with hopes of returning to the concert hall early next year.

See food, beer at SeaWorld.

The SeaWorld Craft Beer Festival is going full blast through Sept. 20. Sample more than 100 Florida and domestic craft brews, along with expertly paired foods.

COVID-19 won’t dampen spirits here, for in addition to the park’s health and safety protocols, SeaWorld’s Craft Beer Festival will feature food and beverage festival locations safely spaced around the park and with modified serving procedures, expanded seating and touchless transactions.

Among the breweries participating is Florida Beer Company, joined by a battalion of brews that includes Blue Moon, Cigar City, Coppertail Brewing Company, Crooked Can, 3 Daughters Brewing, Islamorada Beer Company Hidden Springs Ale Works, Kona Brewing, Orlando Brewing, Tampa Bay Brewing Company and Swamphead, among others.

New among the menu selections this year are Pepper Smoked Brisket Slider, served with a Sam Adams-infused barbecue sauce and tobacco onions; Buffalo Chicken Empanada with buttermilk and celery dressing; Mojo Roasted Heritage Pork Waffle Potato Nachos topped with avocado cream and Cotija cheese, Fried Green Tomato Slider served on a pretzel bun and topped with an onion ring, pimento cheese and arugula, the Impossible Burger™ Slider with lemon hummus and root relish and Yuengling® Bratwurst Roll, topped with Yuengling® Blan and Tan, caramelized onions, pickled mustard and cured cucumbers.

Tickets for eight samples of beer or wine are $45, in addition to entrance fees. Twelve samples are $60.

Because space is limited thanks to the pandemic, you might want to invest in tickets before they are all gone. Purchase Festival tickets at seaworld.com.

Titusville Playhouse’s “Bright Star,” the musical collaboration between Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, ends its run Sunday, Aug. 30, at Titusville Playhouse.

“Bright Star is one of those shows that played on Broadway for about four months and yet the music and the show are amazing,” said Steven Heron, executive artistic director at Titusville Playhouse.

Titusville Playhouse is probably one of the safest places to visit in the county, other than maybe an operating room, for Heron is obsessive about keeping his audiences safe. There is Plexiglas between parties, reduced capacity, mask requirements, uber cleaning and air conditioning running full blast to rapidly circulate the air.

If that fails to sell you on visiting the Playhouse, you can still catch the show at home.

“We have the streaming rights for this show, so even if you are a bit afraid of coming to the theatre, even though we have our strict COVID protocols, you can sit at home and stream it in your home,” Heron said.

Whether at home or at the Playhouse, “Bright Star” is worth the look.

Set in the 1920s and 40s and with a plot that twists and turns, but ends happily in a double wedding, “Bright Star” tells the story of Alice, once a carefree young girl growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains and later a successful magazine editor in Asheville. Enter aspiring young writer Billy, just back from WWII, and Alice immediately senses a connection that runs well beyond sharing a hometown. Billy awakens in Alice a longing for her lost son and she sets out to understand her past, along the way making a discovery that will forever change both of their lives.

“The show happens in North Carolina and has some of the most glorious music written for a Broadway show,” said Heron. “This is a show you will not want to miss."

Performances are at 8 p.m. Fridays, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays.

Available tickets are $25 to $29. To purchase, visit titusvilleplayhouse.com or call 321-268-1125
