In February, Loewe named 30 finalists for its annual craft prize. Set to be only its fourth-ever award, the 2020 prize was to focus on environmental sustainability and, more specifically, upcycling. But just a couple of months later, the urgent topic of the day is no longer climate change but instead the coronavirus pandemic. As such, the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize announced today that it is postponing its upcoming award to spring 2021, in light of the global crisis.
"Loewe's commitment to craft remains as strong as ever and the Loewe Foundation will continue to support craft during this difficult period, through projects including Loewe en Casa—a series of online events and workshops from leading figures in the world of art and craft, hosted on Loewe's Instagram," the Spanish fashion house's statement read.
First founded in 1846 as a small workshop, the brand's ongoing initiative has made sense in light of its robust heritage. And thanks to the involvement of Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, this year's prize was set to elicit laudatory headlines. Last year, the globe-trotting event took nominees and members of the press to Japan, while this year's May finale—and the awarding of over $50,000—was set to unfurl in the City of Light.
"There are candidates from all over the world, including places where opportunities to learn and practice craft are extremely limited," Anatxu Zabalbeascoa, the lead 2020 panelist, told AD PRO earlier this year of those under consideration. "It proves that artistic expression can flourish even in the least favorable situations. We are seeing themes that reflect the state of the industry, social problems, as well as works of the highest cultural and aesthetic ambition." Poignant words, especially considering the context of COVID-19, and the creativity that is likely still germinating.
"The Craft Prize shortlist recognizes artists who have made fundamentally important contributions to the development of contemporary craft," today's statement concluded. "With this ethos in mind, Loewe looks forward to approaching next year with renewed creativity and optimism."
