BROOK PARK, Ohio -- A couple of weeks ago, readers of this column were encouraged to “Share what life is like for you during the coronavirus pandemic.”
Cathy and Ron McCutcheon of Brook Park were the first to respond, with an email focusing on two young girls, Deena Abdallah and Evie Pifer.
The girls, third-grade students at Brook Park Memorial Elementary School, live in the McCutcheons’ neighborhood and recently left a “message of love,” using pine cones and stones, in the couple’s driveway.
“This expression of caring brought tears of emotion to us,” Cathy McCutcheon said.
“We treasure the spontaneous display they created,” the couple said in their email.
You’d be correct in assuming that this fragile work of art might not remain intact, seeing as it’s on a concrete driveway.
“We have been dodging the artwork successfully so far,” the McCutcheons said, “by driving around it."
Tracking cancellations: If you are wondering what has been canceled or postponed in the city of Berea, it would be wise to contact organizations to check on the status of their events.
But here is a complete list, insofar as is known, of events and programs that have been canceled or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic:
- The City of Berea Household Hazardous Waste Collection, Shred Fest and Electronics Roundup scheduled for April 10-11 has been canceled. The next Hazardous Waste Collection will be in August.
- The Grindstone Awards Banquet, usually held in April, has been postponed until September.
- Berea Kiwanis meetings are suspended until further notice.
- The Empty Bowl Supper sponsored by Berea Kiwanis is canceled. In lieu of the dinner, Kiwanis will donate $10,000 to be divided among four food pantries.
- Berea Rotary Club meetings are suspended until further notice.
- The Berea Elks Lodge is closed and its meetings and events are suspended. The Canteen is also closed.
- The Berea City School District Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame induction and dinner scheduled for April 30 has been canceled.
- A Berea Animal Rescue Friends rummage sale set for May 2 is postponed until a later date.
Outreach donations: To donate funds to Berea Community Outreach, please send checks to Berea Community Outreach, 535 Wyleswood Drive, Berea, Ohio 44017.
Donations of canned goods and other non-perishables are also accepted.
Please call ahead (440-826-4891) regarding the donations. Do not enter the building. Someone will meet you at the curb and unload the groceries. Especially needed at this time are pasta and spaghetti sauce.
To drop off donations at the SCAN pantry in Berea, call the pantry at 440-260-7726. Checks can be mailed to SCAN at 11556 White Trail Run, Columbia Station, Ohio 44028.
During this pandemic, all of the pantries can use additional donations and help.
Egg drop is on: Regardless of the recent pandemic quarantine extension, plans are still on to service all Brook Park houses with a planned Easter Egg Drop.
Leading the charge is Kay Marie Root, who said that all supplies have been purchased “so, unfortunately, we are unable to refund anyone.”
“If you personally choose to not have us come out, that is definitely understandable and we will respect your wishes,” Root said, adding that “If that is your request, we can offer you a free service for next year, or come to our Candy Cane drop if you choose to do so.”
“I hope everyone its staying safe and we look forward to everyone still being able to have a great Easter Sunday,” Root said.
Telephone scam: Most of us have probably heard of that telephone call from your grandson scam that is aimed at “older” folks.
Betty Jean of Brook Park was among the most recent to receive the scammer’s call and relates her experience in the “You Know You’re From Brook Park” group on facebook.
“Anyone else getting calls from someone pretending to be your grandson?" Betty Jean asks, adding that, for her, the attempted scam was a no-brainer.
“Easy for me,” she said. “I have no grandson!”
Senior Connection: The Middleburg Heights Senior Connection wants you to know they are doing their part to help keep you healthy and safe. Seeing as the Connection had to cancel their planned St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon, “we hope to see you in June for our picnic,” a spokesman said.
Free films: If you have a library card, you’ve got access to Kanopy and the ability to sign up to start streaming films instantly and at no cost, from any computer, television, mobile device or platform, by downloading the Canopy app for IOS, Android, AppleTV, Chromecast or Roku.
